Appropriately in time for Valentine’s Day and the better weather ahead, Sara Duke of I made this for you (1244 Bloor St. W) is showing Bloordale how much she loves being here with I Heart Bloordale tank-tops.
“People here are super nice,” Duke says and shortly after opening up her custom-fashion store on December 9th she says, “people from the neighborhood have been coming in and have been excited that we have brought something new.”
Duke started her fashion career at Ryerson University and graduated in 2007 to work for product development companies. Unfortunately, Duke says that that line of work was “very far from the actual making of clothes.”
She then began doing custom projects out of her small one bedroom apartment. Starting with her own wedding dress, she moved on to do her friend’s dresses and soon landed a bigger contract for someone else’s.
A year after these projects, in Fall of ’09, Duke opened up her first shop on Markham St. in the Annex, which had little more breathing room than her apartment.
After just over a year in that spot, Duke found that she was tired of the below-street-level setup and moved her way into Bloordale.
Along with custom orders, the shop features Duke’s ‘modernized-vintage’ lineup called ‘If you see cake,’ which features modern styles of clothing with incorporated vintage prints and logos. Duke says that the lineup solves problems like worn-out prints and un-proper fits; obstacles which go hand-in-hand when trying to dress head to toe in vintage.
The newest product, the I Heart Bloordale Tank-top was a collaboration between Duke, OCAD student Sam Johnstone and Kyle Sanvictores, one-half of stage-designers AKA creative group, with whom she shares her office.
The top is currently on sale for $28.00 and can be purchased anytime during the store’s regular business hours which are Thursday, Friday or Saturday from noon to seven.
